THE STILLERS OF MY YOUTH

First of all, let me preface this post by saying that I have NOT watched every regular season game this year or any year for that matter, and that I do NOT know all the names of the players on the team {What's the quarterback's name anyways?}, and that I can NOT tell you every year that the Steelers have won the Super Bowl or any other pertinent statistics. All I know is that this year, 2009, they have once again made it to the BIG GAME, and that they are the odds favorite to win, WOO HOO!!! And I will be watching them this Sunday with the other members of my family who really do know all the above-mentioned info, lol

Being a lifelong 40+ year resident of Western Pennsylvania --- except for those 3 1/2 yrs I lived in two other states we won't even mention --- and living never more than 2 1/2 hours away from Pittsburgh, Stiller fans are probably the most loyal and most maniacal fans out there (Trust me, I know quite a few of them personally).

Oh, by the way, the article below I will admit without any shame was complete plagiarized by myself. I just thought it would be fun for all you 40+ year olds to look back at the '70s because this is the Steelers that I remember the most.

1970s: A 1-13 record in 1969 gave the Steelers the first overall choice in the 1970 draft, with which Noll addressed the offense by selecting quarterback Terry Bradshaw, another Hall of Famer, after the Steelers won the first selection by winning a coin toss with the Chicago Bears. Cornerback Mel Blount was added in the third round that year, followed by linebacker Jack Ham in 1971 and running back Franco Harris in 1972. In all, Noll drafted nine players who are now enshrined in the Hall of Fame including three in his first 20 picks and four of his first 38.

Two significant changes took place in 1970. The Steelers moved from the NFL Century Division to the AFC Central with the merger of the American Football League and the NFL. The Steelers also moved into a new home as Three Rivers Stadium opened. Previously, the Steelers had played home games at Forbes Field from 1933-57 and at both Forbes Field and Pitt Stadium from 1958-63. From 1964-69 the Steelers played at Pitt Stadium until Three Rivers opened in 1970.

Gradual improvement in the early 1970s resulted in the team's first division title in 1972 with an 11-3 record. In the first playoff game at Three Rivers the Steelers defeated the Oakland Raiders 13-7 with Franco Harris' "Immaculate Reception" in the final minute. Despite a 21-17 loss the following week to the undefeated Miami Dolphins, the Steelers had reached a new plateau.

It took 40 years for the Steelers to finally win their first division title, but over the next decade they achieved a level of success unprecedented in professional football.

In 1973 the Steelers won a wild card playoff berth with a 10-4 record. Oakland avenged their loss from the previous year, however, with a 33-14 defeat of the Steelers in the playoffs.

The Steelers won their first of six consecutive AFC Central titles in 1974 and marched past Buffalo (32-14) and Oakland (24-13) en route to their first Super Bowl appearance in Super Bowl IX. The fierce Pittsburgh defense led the way to a 16-6 victory vs. the Minnesota Vikings, and Art Rooney was presented the Vince Lombardi Trophy for the first time.

In 1975 the Steelers won 11 straight games to finish 12-2 and claim their second consecutive division crown. After defeating Baltimore (28-10) and Oakland (16-10) in the playoffs the Steelers became the third team in NFL history, joining Green Bay and Miami, to win back-to-back Super Bowls with a 21-17 win versus the Dallas Cowboys in Super Bowl X.

The 1976 Steelers struggled to a 1-4 start before reeling off nine straight victories including five shutouts to win the division with a 10-4 mark. They defeated Baltimore 40-14 in the playoffs, but lost to Oakland, 24-7, after both starting running backs, Franco Harris and Rocky Bleier, were injured. The following year the Steelers dropped a 34-21 decision to Denver in the first round of the playoffs after posting a 9-5 regular-season record.

In 1978 the Steelers made history after a league-best 14-2 regular season and playoff wins versus Denver (33-10) and Houston (34-5). Their 35-31 Super Bowl XIII win versus Dallas made the Steelers the first team to win three Super Bowls.

Yet another standard was set the following year when the 1979 Steelers defeated the Los Angeles Rams, 31-19, in Super Bowl XIV to make them the first team in history to win four Super Bowls and the only team to win back-to-back Super Bowls twice. The Super Bowl victory followed a 12-4 regular season and playoff wins versus Miami (34-14) and Houston (27-13). With six consecutive AFC Central crowns, eight straight years of playoff appearances and four Super Bowl championships, the Steelers were tagged the "Team of the Decade" for the 1970s.

"IN GOD WE TRUST"

In light of President Obama being inaugurated as our 44th President of the United States on Tuesday, and as a "REMINDER" to him and our Supreme Court of the values this country was founded upon, I thought this video was appropriate to post at this time.

OH, MY! SHE'S FOUR ALREADY!?!

Well, I can't believe that my dear sweet little granddaughter Logan May turned four today. Wow! It just seems like yesterday when she was fingerpainting on our new drywalls...oh, wait, that was yesterday.

It just seems like yesterday when I told her to quit pickin her nose and...oh, wait, that was yesterday, too.

Well, it just seems like yesterday when she was taking Lulu for a ride in her baby carriage...oh, wait, that also happened yesterday.

It just seemed like yesterday....wait a minute, what was I talking about? Oh, yeah, this kid drives me nuts and I love, love, love her! Roger, Leyna and I had my mom and dad and my brother Chris and my nephew Christopher over for supper tonight and then we all had some cake and ice cream.

We are singing "Happy Birthday" to Logan and she is acting a little shy, and I mean acting. This girl doesn't know the meaning of the word shy!And she's blowing out her candle.Christopher always knows how to smile for the camera. He's had lots of practice!I'm not quite sure what kind of smile this is that Logan is displaying, but she's been doing it a lot lately...hmmmmm.Look real close at this cake. Does it look like it possibly could've been dropped? If you said yes, you're correct!!! And no, it wasn't me this time, but my Mom. She was carrying it into the livingroom to show my Dad and wasn't aware that it was just sitting on the platform instead of sitting down inside it and...woops, there it went landing facedown on the floor, but luckily all the decorations on it protected the face of it and it only suffered minimal damage, lol. Hannah Montana saves the day yet again.

PHOTO ENTRY CONTEST - WEEK #2

This is my photo entry in the Kids Category ~ WEEK 2 ~ at

AN ALPHABET MEME

First off, what is a MEME? I asked that same question a couple weeks ago after seeing them mentioned on a number of blogs I'm a lurker on. So.....I looked it up!

A meme (pronounced /miːm/) comprises a unit or element of cultural ideas, symbols or practices; such units or elements transmit from one mind to another through speech, gestures, rituals, or other imitable phenomena. The etymology of the term relates to the Greek word mimema for mimic.

I tell you all that to say that my new bloggy friend Betsy has assigned me the letter "J" for my Alphabet Meme. And so here's what we're gonna do. Leave a comment on this post and I will assign you a letter. Write about ten things you love that begin with said letter. Post the list on your blog. When people comment on your list, you assign a letter, and the game continues. I will only assign a letter if you request it, so don't forget to leave a comment.

This is actually kind of tricky to do, so here we go.

JESUS --- This one is kind of a no-brainer. I love Jesus, I love his Church, I love his people, and I love the life he has been guiding me towards since the day I was born.

JUDAH --- Judah was the fourth son of Jacob, one of the patriarchs of the Old Testament and father of the twelve tribes of Israel. Our Lord was born from the tribe of Judah.

JOB --- I'm a freelance court reporter and I love my job. I don't always like it or some of the people I have to deal with, but I do love it. Pssst....don't tell anyone, but it was my Mom's idea 21 years ago.

JESTING --- Nobody likes jesting and verbally sparring back and forth more than me and my family. We love cornball jokes (another J word) and we love to laugh and fool around.

JOYOUS --- You all knew this word would be on the list. As Christians we are commanded to "Rejoice in the Lord always, and again I say Rejoice!" To be filled with joy --- Joyous!

JOSH & JAKE --- I had to combine these two brothers, my nephews, because if one saw his name on here and not the other...well, we know what would happen. And it goes without saying that I love these two guys very much!

JUSTICE --- Working in the legal profession, and working in our local courthouses from time to time, I love when true justice is served. Not revenge, but JUSTICE. It doesn't happen often, but sometimes, by our human standards, the punishment does fit the crime.

JELLO --- I like a good jello pie. Oh, not just the Jello you mix up. No, I'm talking about the kind of pie where you mix the Jello with some cream cheese and powdered sugar (and some other ingredients I can't remember off the top of my head), poured into a graham cracker crust. Yummy, yummy, yummy.

JAMMING --- I love jamming, whether it's listening or singing along to my favorite tunes on the radio, singing and dancing with my granddaughter in our livingroom to Disney Tunes, or singing praises to our God.

JIGSAWS --- I haven't been able to put them together too often, but I do love jigsaw puzzles. I remember when I was little my granny always had one out on her kitchen table when we went to visit.

THE SOVEREIGNTY OF THE LORD IN CREATION AND HISTORY

On January 20th Barack Obama will take the oath of office to be our next President of the United States. Whether you voted for him or not, God willing he is going to be our next president. People, we need to pray and then pray some more for this man. We need to pray that he'll have the wisdom he needs to make Godly decisions for this country's future based on the Christian principles and values that this country was founded upon. We need to pray that his wife counsels him and guides him in the right direction when making decisions with regard to this country's future. We need to pray that he uses his presidency to do not what's in own best interest or those around him, but to do what is in the best interest of this country.

Rejoice in the Lord, O you righteous! For praise from the upright is beautiful.

Praise the Lord with the harp;
Make melody to Him with an instrument of ten strings.

Sing to Him a new song;
Play skillfully with a shout of joy.

For the word of the Lord is right,
And all His work is done in truth.

He loves righteousness and justice;
The earth is full of the goodness of the Lord.

By the word of the Lord the heavens were made,
And all the host of them by the breath of His mouth.

He gathers the waters of the sea together as a heap;
He lays up the deep in storehouses.

Let all the earth fear the Lord;
Let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of Him.

For He spoke, and it was done;
He commanded, and it stood fast.

The Lord brings the counsel of the nations to nothing;
He makes the plans of the peoples of no effect.

The counsel of the Lord stands forever,
The plans of His heart to all generations.

Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord,
The people He has chosen as His own inheritance.

The Lord looks from heaven;
He sees all the sons of men.

From the place of His dwelling He looks
On all the inhabitants of the earth;

He fashions their hearts individually;
He considers all their works.

No king is saved by the multitude of an army;
A mighty man is not delivered by great strength.

A horse is a vain hope for safety;
Neither shall it deliver any by its great strength.

Behold, the eye of the Lord is on those who fear Him,
On those who hope in His mercy,

To deliver their soul from death,
And to keep them alive in famine.

Our soul waits for the Lord;
He is our help and our shield.

For our heart shall rejoice in Him,
Because we have trusted in His holy name.

Let Your mercy, O Lord, be upon us,
Just as we hope in You.

A FELLOW BLOGGER'S DEVASTATING FIRE

The Saunders family whose journey with adoption I've been following for the past few months suffered a devastating fire in their home this morning. They just recently adopted and brought home their two children ages 2 and 3 from Africa to join their already seven other children, and are currently waiting to bring their daughter Jubilee home from China. Please pray for this family!!! I have really come to care about them all even though we've never met. A ChipIn! fund has been established by personal friends of theirs for anyone who would like to make a monetary donation to help this family get back on their feet. They have lost just about everything. You can read about this family and the fire to their home at A Place Called Simplicity. Donations can be made by simply clicking HERE.

JEWELRY GIVEAWAY

Once again in my bloggy travels I came across another giveaway. If you click HERE, you can enter the giveaway by posting a comment at the site.

WINTER HOUSE TRAINING

Have you ever tried to train a three pound dog in the middle of winter? Me neither. It stinks! Luckily three pound dogs don't poop at any given time in mass quantities, or some little puppy would be sitting outside until her hiney froze off. So in between naps and bodily functions I got off a few shots of our precious little Lulu. By the way, I didn't mention it in the last post about her that she's a Miniature Schnauzer, just in case one of you all wants to run out right away and get one!

Hey, you got yourself up on that step, now get yourself down.Lulu, kill that ferocious puppy eating cow!Notice the lifeless carcass of the cow in the background? Good, Lulu!!

LURKING ABOUT

As many of you know who visit my little amateur blog regularly, recently I on my own changed the layout of the thing. Well......I DON'T LIKE THIS ONE EITHER!!!lol. So I'm going to stop trying to do what I know others can do MUCH better and consult a professional who is going to design my own one of a kind just the way I want it template, and I am positive there will be designs put in that I never even thought of or knew I wanted. This may take a while so please be patient. In the meantime I don't think I can do anymore damage than I've already done with colors, layout and basic yuck of the blog.

You also may have noticed on the left-hand column I added a button entitled Blog Around The World.This is a site that links you up with, well, blogs around the world that are done by mostly moms, homeschoolers, women of faith, basically just women bloggers in general. It's really neat, and so far I've been reading a blog of a homeschooling mom in Ireland, quite a few blogs from women in Pennsylvania and all across the country.

What I've found out is......THERE ARE A LOT OF WOMEN WITH A LOT TO SAY!

What I've also found is that a lot of these blogs have tons of giveaways just for commenting on their posts. For example Lauren at Reading Grounds has a monthly book giveaway for posting on her site, and Lolli at Life is Sweet is having a MAMA MIA giveaway. Finally, Aubrey at The Fam Five is having a great girlie gift giveaway. If you have a minute or two, check out these sites, and once again, all you have to do is leave a comment and you're entered for the giveaways, ...IT'S THAT EASY!

THIS SAYS IT ALL!

I've seen this lady perform this song before, but while lurking I found this on another blog.

MAKE WAY FOR LULU

When I posted an hour ago, I told everyone to "stay tuned" thinking that it would be a while until I had pictures of our new puppy because we were thinking of getting Logan one for her birthday, which isn't until Jan. 19th. Little did I know that no sooner did I hit the "Publish Post" button that Leyna and Logan were walking through the door with this!!!Meet the newest addition to our family........LULU!!!Lulu has totally attached herself to Logan, following her everywhere and whining when she leaves the room. After only an hour Logan was starting to get a little frustrated with it all and is learning to cope. Let the training begin for both of them.
I'm a cat lover, have been since I was a little girl. Oh, I like dogs, too, but cats are just kewl. Since I got my first kitty when I was oh, I dunno, maybe 10 or 11, I've always had at least A cat, for the most part more than one. My first cat's name was Hutch. You got that right, I was also a big Starsky & Hutch fan. You know you remember them! When Hutch died, right before my big junior year band concert mind you, I was crushed. But with cats there's always another one right around the corner.

Then there was our cat Leonard (from Lenny & Squiggy), sensing a theme yet? My brother Chris felt so bad that Hutch had died that he brought him home one day for me from a friend's house. He was the runt of his litter, but he turned out to be the best mouser and mole killer on Follett Run.

After Leyna and I were settled in Pittsburgh, there was our first cat Tony (who I had to put to sleep, horrible for any of you who have had to do that) and Ashe, we moved those two with us to Clearfield and acquired a stray kitten, Tiger. We had to find homes for those two when we moved to Indiana, but once there we got Lacy and Sassy who were sisters from the Humane Society (back then not the nazi organization it has turned out to be today. It is almost as hard to adopt an animal from them as it is a child). Lacy later got hit by a car, :(, but not before she had two litters, Lacey liked to run around at night, bad girl. She got hit by the way a week after I had her spayed. From the first litter (April of 1994) my mom took Betty and she's still alive and kickin.

From the second litter (August of 1994) we got Cinnamon and Tipsy and they're still alive and kickin (pictured left). Cats always look so impressed when you take their pictures; huh?

Then in 1996 we took in a stray, Teeny, (pictured left) she's still with us, and acquired another kitten that same year who we just called Little Kitty, nasty little thing. She was never supposed to stay, but the owners never came to get her back, lol. She got out one night after we moved to the farm and died mysteriously up in the woods.

We were given another kitten in 2000, Moe. There was waaayyy too much estrogen in our house for Roger so I got him a friend, lol. Moe unfortunately didn't last long, he died this past summer from what, we dunno. Roger on the other hand is going to last a lifetime I'm sorry to tell him.

Leyna went to college and took Moe and Teeny with her and low and behold a stray kitten who she named Ernie found his way to her apartment, too! I think both Leyna and I have "Sucker" written on our backs. Ernie was a very cool cat, but he too suffered the same fate as Little Kitty. He got out one night and died mysteriously up in the woods.

Now, you're probably wondering why I'm telling you all this; right? Because I'm guessing that the majority of you are not cat lovers; right? Right. Well, I said all this to say this!

WE ARE GETTING A DOG!

(so stay tuned)

CHURCH FUNNIES!

(I got these today in an email and thought they were cute)

Attending a wedding for the first time, a little girl whispered to her mother, "Why is the bride dressed in white?" The mother replied, "Because white is the color of happiness, and today is the happiest day of her life." The child thought about this for a moment then said, "So why is the groom wearing black?"

A little girl, dressed in her Sunday best, was running as fast as she could, trying not to be late for Bible class. As she ran she prayed, "Dear Lord, please don't let me be late! Dear Lord, please don't let me be late!" While she was running and praying, she tripped on a curb and fell, getting her clothes dirty and tearing her dress. She got up, brushed herself off, and started running again! As she ran she once again began to pray, "Dear Lord, please don't let me be late...But please don't shove me either!"

Three boys are in the school yard bragging about their fathers. The first boy says, "My Dad scribbles a few words on a piece of paper, he calls it a poem, they give him $50." The second boy says, "That's nothing. My Dad scribbles a few words on piece of paper, he calls it a song, they give him $100." The third boy says, "I got you both beat. My Dad scribbles a few words on a piece of paper, he calls it a sermon, and it takes eight people to collect all the money!"

An elderly woman died last month. Having never married, she requested no male pallbearers. In her handwritten instructions for her memorial service, she wrote, "They wouldn't take me out while I was alive, I don't want them to take me out when I'm dead."

A police recruit was asked during the exam, "What would you do if you had to arrest your own mother?" He answered, "Call for backup."

A Sunday School teacher asked her class why Joseph and Mary took Jesus with them to Jerusalem. A small child replied, "They couldn't get a baby-sitter."

A Sunday school teacher was discussing the Ten Commandments with her five and six year olds. After explaining the commandment to "Honor thy father and thy mother," she asked, "Is there a commandment that teaches us how to treat our brothers and sisters?" Without missing a beat, one little boy answered, "Thou shall not kill."

At Sunday School they were teaching how God created everything, including human beings. Little Johnny seemed especially intent when they told him how Eve was created out of one of Adam's ribs. Later in the week his mother noticed him lying down as though he were ill, and she said "Johnny, what is the matter?" Little Johnny responded, "I have pain in my side. I think I'm going to have a wife."

Two boys were walking home from Sunday school after hearing a strong preaching on the devil. One said to the other, "What do you think about all this Satan stuff?" The other boy replied, "Well, you know how Santa Claus turned out. It's probably just your Dad."

MOVIES AND HEADACHES!

Tonight I took my Sunday morning bible class of four 5th and 6th graders to the movies to see Marley and Me as a reward for memorizing 12 Bible verses in 12 weeks, all about Jesus. These four kids, one girl (McKayla) and three boys (Collin, Josh & John), do a terrific job memorizing bible verses, facts, lists and just about anything else that we can throw at them about the Bible. It is amazing to me the vast knowledge at their age that they have about the Bible, about God's plan for them, and even the knowledge they have about things most adults just don't seem to get.

Now, the headache part. You know the kind of headache I'm talking about; right? The kind you get when all you really want to do is just bawl like a little baby, but you can't, 'cause you're in public and everybody is going to be watching {say, I dunno, like three elementary school boys who think it's funny you're crying at a movie}, so you have to try as best you can to keep it in. Yeah, that's the one, the kind I like to call the pressure cooker headache. Well, let me tell you if you haven't seen Marley and Me, you need to go see this movie. It was THAT good and well worth the headache. Now...where's that stinkin' Tylenol?

AND...as an added bonus, we were the only five people in the movie theatre!! Way to go Monday night at the movies!

Another Grab a Kleenex Moment, Folks

New Year's Eve - Leyna and Logie Style

After coming to the fellowship up at the church, Leyna and Logan decided to leave around 10 PM to finish the rest of their celebrating at home, BY THEMSELVES! Armed with two hats and two noise makers, they rang in the New Year just the way they both wanted to --- TOGETHER. Here are some self-portraits that Leyna took of the two of them, and then of course Logie by her cute self.
